The Rolls-Royce Armoured Car 1920 Pattern Mk1 (SP11).

The SP11 model is of a Rolls-Royce armoured car of the 1920's pattern.

Rolls-Royce Armoured Car 1920

In 1920 the War Office needed new armoured cars and decided that the Rolls-Royce vehicles were the most reliable and resilient.  The chassis was the 40/50hp Silver Ghost built by Rolls-Royce in Derby in 1920 and these were modified with stronger rear springs and with special disc wheels.  The armour was fitted in 1920 in Woolwich Arsenal and consisted of covers for the engine and crew compartment, with the radiator being protected by hinged doors at the front.  The turret was fitted with a machine gun.  This was water cooled and the turret was turned by hand.  At the rear of the car was an open area with wooden lockers on each side for stowing tools and the crew‘s kit.

This armoured car was first used by No 5 Armoured Car Company of the Tank Corps in Dublin, Ireland in January 1921 and was then transferred to Scarborough in 1922 where it was used until 1927.  In 1927 the car was sent with the Armoured Car Company to Shanghai for use as part of the British Contingent of the League of Nations International Force to protect the International Settlement.  Between 1929 and 1938 it was used in Egypt, being used by the No 5 Armoured Car Company until 1932 when it was transferred to the 12th Royal Lancers and then in 1934 to the 11th Royal Hussars.

In 1938 the car was returned to Britain where it was used on anti invasion patrols along the North East coast by the 1st Derbyshire Yeomanry.  After the war it was transferred to the Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset, where it can be seen by visitors to the museum.  It was used to transport Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II during a royal visit to the museum in May 1997.
